Job description
Who we are At Frontiers, we are on a mission to make science open. Most research today sits behind paywalls, meaning only people at well-funded universities or those who can pay get to read it. Open access flips that: every article we publish is peer-reviewed and made available online to anyone, anywhere at no cost. As one of the world’s largest and most influential open-access publishers, we’ve seen Frontiers research cited 16 million times, and viewed and downloaded more than 5.3 billion times, proof of what science without barriers can do.
What you'll do We are seeking qualified applicants for the position of Copyediting Specialist. This role offers an excellent opportunity to develop your copyediting expertise at a rapidly growing open access publisher, working at the heart of academic journal publishing operations. The role requires a professional, self-motivated approach and the ability to copyedit quickly and accurately to the highest quality standards.
Copyedit STM/HSS journal articles for clarity, accuracy and structure, addressing spelling, punctuation, grammar and style
Ensure all articles maintain a professional, academic tone, while preserving the author’s voice
Check text for readability and adherence to the Frontiers Copyediting House Style Guide
Perform quality control for articles copyedited by Frontiers’ external suppliers
Liaise with other members of the Copyediting Team to resolve editing and workflow issues
Collaborate with and provide support for the larger Production team to ensure that all articles requiring copyediting (at any language-quality level) are published on time to the highest quality standards
Troubleshoot publishing platform issues in collaboration with IT
Contribute to Copyediting Team, Production and interdepartmental initiatives and special projects
Develop and implement individual copyediting-related special projects
Report to the Copyediting Manager
At least 3 years of experience copyediting STM/HSS academic journals
Excellent written and spoken English, with a sharp editorial eye
Highly focused and detail-oriented, with an instinct for consistency and precision
Strong digital skills, including proficiency in MS Office, Adobe Acrobat and web-based platforms, as well as familiarity with AI tools
Self-motivated and autonomous, able to exercise sound editorial judgement with minimal supervision
Composed under pressure, with a proven ability to meet tight deadlines and balance high volume with meticulous quality
A collaborative mindset, comfortable working within an immediate team as well as across wider cross-functional and matrix structures
We prioritise office presence and emphasise in-person collaboration, but also offer appropriate adjustments where needed, in line with company policy
Extra wellbeing days on top of your annual leave allowance
Up to 3 paid volunteering days each year
24/7 confidential Employee Assistance Programme (wellbeing, mental health, legal & financial support)
Learning & development support via the Frontiers Learning Hub
