Job description

What if you could do the kind of work the world needs?

At WSP, you can access our global scale, contribute to landmark projects and connect with the brightest minds in your field to do the best work of your life. You can embrace your curiosity in a culture that celebrates new ideas and diverse perspectives. You can experience a world of opportunity and the chance to shape a career as unique as you.

A little more about your role…

Due to our expanding public and private sector workload, we are looking for a Principal or Associate Consultant with proven and demonstrable experience in the zero emission mobility consulting arena, to join the Future of Mobility team - part of our WSP Transport & Mobility business.

There is flexibility around where this role can be based, with potential home offices including: Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London and Manchester - with hybrid working allowing for a mix of in-office and home working.

You can expect to be active on several projects and client accounts at any given time including leading your own projects and client relationships. The role has a zero emission focus and you will report to a senior member of our team with expected day-to-day tasks that include the following:

Providing day-to-day support in the delivery of a range of projects, which at any one time could include a selection of the following: EV strategy and policy development and review

Fleet decarbonisation– such as fleet upgrading assessments or developing business cases for fleet decarbonisation

EV charging and funding bid support – such as supporting clients with their Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure bids including procurement support

Analysing EV charging opportunities for a city region or for a cluster of mobility hubs

Analysing the wider impacts of net zero policy on the EV agenda for a region

Creating roadmaps to decarbonisaton for “harder to decarbonise” fleets and applications

Leading and supporting projects, covering not only technical subject matter expertise but also taking on project management roles, ensuring projects are delivered on time and to budget.

Applying strong analytical skills to critically evaluate and analyse data to provide robust recommendations. This will include numerical data, geographical data and qualitative data.

Helping to drive innovation and identify market trends to add value to projects and bids, and position WSP to maximise our future opportunities.

Supporting with, or leading, business development, the preparation of bids, fee proposals and project programmes.

Building and maintaining effective client relationships, delivering a high standard of client care.

Working at both strategic and detailed levels with strong interpersonal and communication skills, able to communicate confidently with clients, stakeholders and team members.

Actively managing and leading efforts to build and maintain collaborative, cooperative, and harmonious working relationships with both clients and colleagues. Working as part of a team, sharing knowledge and supporting the growth of the Future Mobility offer in your office, and nationally.

Building relationships across other internal teams to identify and co-develop opportunities for adding value to our clients’ projects.

Being present in the office (hybrid working) alongside colleagues and working with colleagues across the UK and overseas.

Working closely with our senior team, and supporting the professional development of our junior staff, you will be an important member of our Future of Mobility team. The role presents an excellent opportunity to progress your career and expand your professional horizons.

Your Team

We offer a variety of expertise, approaches and skills to support our public and private sector clients with their futures challenges, in the mobility sector and beyond. Our team works across a range of areas including:

Zero emission mobility, helping clients switch to electric, hydrogen and alternative fuelled vehicles.

New modes and services, supporting clients to harness new technologies and business models in transport – from e-scooters and demand responsive transport to cargo bikes and Mobility as a Service.

Accessibility and inclusion, working to make transport more accessible for all by taking a human centred approach.

Policy and futures, using a range of techniques to horizon scan and build future mobility into new policies and strategies.

The team includes a wide range of specialists. We are town planners, economists, accountants, behavioural scientists, and, of course, transport planners. We have an extensive portfolio of multi-disciplinary and cross sector projects for a range clients in the UK and abroad. As our team builds on and enhances our core capabilities, our zero emission work stream is being supported by these other core work areas – such as accessibility and so you’ll have a chance to develop your existing zero emission skills alongside other technical experts.

What we will be looking for you to demonstrate…

Experienced as a consultant in Zero Emission mobility in the areas specified is preferable, but other candidates who bring strong sector experience are encouraged to apply

Enthusiastic and passionate about the future of mobility, improving transport options, and delivering high quality work for our clients

Curious, and comfortable using critical thinking and analytical skills to deeply understand problems before identifying solutions

Comfortable developing bespoke approaches to support individual projects or solving specific challenges

Able to become immersed in understanding key trends for future mobility and those in wider but connected sectors

Comfortable working across a range of subject areas concurrently and able to quickly switch context

Able to show initiative, are not afraid to ask questions and challenge us, and want to go the extra mile to add value to our existi
